A great deal was destroyed in the period 1500-1700 and only survives in a fragmentary state. Collectors bought glass panels and fragments removed from their original settinsg and leaded them together for display in their own homes. The image on this fragment is a heraldic lion.\r\n\r\nThe decorating technique used here was first developed in the early part of the period 1300-1400. It consisted of painting a compound of silver on the back of the glass which, after firing in a kiln, turns yellow. Many panels from the 14th and 15th centuries are decorated simply in yellow (silver) stain and highlighted with a brown/black pigment.","physicalDescription":"Fragment of white glass with yellow stain and dark brown decoration.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"staining","id":"AAT53058"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stained glass","categories":[{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"},{"text":"British Galleries","id":"THES48985"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AJ7437","2006AJ7871"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES392109"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fragment","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1400-1499","earliest":"1400-01-01","latest":"1499-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr. Grosvenor Thomas","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"3.75","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Taken from Stained Glass Handlist","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Stained glass fragment, white glass with yellow stain and dark brown decoration, English, 15th century.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"animal","id":"x33594"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.332-1915"],"accessionNumberNum":"332","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1915,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-12","recordCreationDate":"2002-07-15","availableToBook":true}}
