The two men were part of a group of 12 spies whom Moses had sent to ‘spy out’ Canaan, the Promised Land. All reported back that it was indeed a wonderful place, but only two recommended an invasion and the other spies suggested that they should be stoned.\r\n\r\nThe decorating technique used on this panel was first developed in the early part of the period 1300-1400. It consisted of painting a compound of silver on the back of the glass which, after firing in a kiln, turns yellow. Depending on the concentration of the silver compound, the resulting colour ranges from lemon-yellow to a burnt-orange. Many panels from the period 1300-1500 are decorated simply in yellow (silver) stain and highlighted with a brown/black pigment. \r\n\r\nThe technique remained popular well after the 16th century, as this panel shows.","physicalDescription":"Roundel depicting the Children of Israel stoning the spies, in brown and red enamel and silver yellow stain.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"staining","id":"AAT53058"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stained glass","categories":[{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AJ7903","2006AJ7902","2021MV2411"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"023","id":"THES316714"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"034","id":"THES316686"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Roundel","id":"AAT10267"}],[{"text":"fragment","id":"AAT117130"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Flanders (region)","id":"x36939"},"association":{"text":"made","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1600-1699","earliest":"1600-01-01","latest":"1699-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mathilda Mary Wesley","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"58.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"unframed composite panel"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"41.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"unframed composite panel"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Stained glass roundel depicting the Children of Israel stoning the spies, Flemish, 17th century.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Caleb","id":"N1935"},{"text":"Joshua","id":"N617"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[{"text":"The Children of Israel stoning the spies","id":"V211"}],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"religions","id":"AAT73708"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":["<font -u>Numbers</font> Ch 13"],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["942:1-1907","942:2-1907"],"accessionNumberNum":"942","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1907,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-12","recordCreationDate":"2002-07-15","availableToBook":true}}
