Medieval glass, when coloured all the way through, is known as 'pot metal' glass. The colour was produced by adding metallic oxides to the clear molten glass mixture. Here the glassmaker has added cobalt to produce a blue colour.\r\n \r\nSolid red 'pot metal' glass does not transmit light well and in the medieval period glassmakers developed a technique that allowed more light to pass through. They coated clear glass with a thin layer of coloured glass.
