The scene of the 'Adoration of the Magi' is one of the earliest depicted in Christian art. The magi ('wise men') were traditionally astrologers of the Persian court and priests of the cult of Mithras. Later they were redefined as kings. The gifts they brought to the Christ Child were described by the English historian Bede (673-735) as gold, frankincense and myrrh. By the 9th century they were defined as three in number and given the names Caspar, Balthazar and Melchior.\r\n\r\nGerhard Remisch was a glass painter and head of a prolific workshop in the Rhineland in the early part of the period 1500-1600.","physicalDescription":"Stained glass panel depicting adoration of the Magi.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Remisch","id":"A6030"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Stained glass","id":"AAT10853"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"staining","id":"AAT53058"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stained glass","categories":[{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AK9937","2017KA8422"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES304401"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"16th century","earliest":"1500-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by E.E.
