As his pupil, she learnt several printmaking techniques, but came to specialise in aquatint. In 1786, Prestel and her children moved to London to capitalise on the booming print market. She made prints translating the Old Masters for large print publishers such as John Boydell, but also undertook commissions directly from artists. Prestel is unusual in that she also trained her daughter, Ursula Magdalena Prestel, to make prints.","physicalDescription":"Black and white print showing a group of people surrounded by cherubs.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Prestel, Maria Catharina","id":"AUTH341582"},"association":{"text":"Maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"Paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"},{"text":"aquatint","id":"AAT53242"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching with aquatint, ink on paper.","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2023NM6464"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"I","shelf":"11","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1781","earliest":"1781-01-01","latest":"1781-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"20","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Sheet"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"15.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Sheet"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'The Holy Family with Saints and Angels.', etching with aquatint by Maria Catharina Prestel, Germany, 1781.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"These two plates were made in Germany, before Prestel moved to London, and are part of her reproductive series illustrating the work of the ‘Best Painters of Italy, Germany and the Netherlands, Taken from Various Famous Cabinets’.
