The horse and rider are related in form and style to the equestrian statue of King Charles I by Le Sueur (1633), now in Trafalgar Square, and to a another bronze statuette of Louis XIII on horseback in the Museum (A.47-1951). The present one is  the only known example of a signed statuette by the sculptor (inscribed LESVEVER on the girth).  This type of walking horse is derived from Giambologna's monument to Cosimo I (Piazza della Signoria, Florence) which was reflected in Pietro Tacca's equestrian monument to Henri IV of France, formerly on the Pont Neuf, Paris, but destroyed during the French Revolution.\n\nHubert Le Sueur (1580-1658) was the son of a master armourer. He became ‘Sculptor in Ordinary’ to Louis XIII of France in 1614 and later came to England to work for Charles I, shortly after the King's marriage to Louis' sister, Henrietta Maria. He specialised primarily in bronze.
