He described the subject of his painting as 'Ladies and animals...in various relations to each other'. The three panels on the front show ladies feeding pigs, parrot and fishes. \r\n\r\nBurne-Jones had begun painting furniture a few years earlier when he shared a studio in Red Lion Square, London, with the designer William Morris. They were influenced by medieval furniture which was plain and strongly-built, but with a surface decoration of painting.","physicalDescription":"Sideboard, rectangular with an open base, and two drawers and three cupboards in the upper section, the front painted with large scale figures on the theme of 'ladies and animals'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Edward Coley Burne-Jones","id":"A8203"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Edward Coley Burne-Jones","id":"A8203"},"association":{"text":"decorator","id":"x30812"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pinewood","id":"x34984"},{"text":"oil colour","id":"AAT15050"},{"text":"gold leaf","id":"x33207"},{"text":"silver leaf","id":"THES248602"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting (image making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pine, painted in oil paint, with gold and silver leaf","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Nouveau","id":"AAT21430"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AK7958","2006AP3090","2018KT1171","2019MH2975","2019MH2977","2019MH2978","2019MH2979","2019MH2980"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343852"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343852"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343852"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sideboard","id":""}],[{"text":"drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"drawer","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1860","earliest":"1860-01-01","latest":"1860-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs. J.W. The red-brown finish on the top and on the shelf at the bottom is similar to that used for the stand on the St. George Cabinet. \r\n\r\nEdward and Georgiana Burne-Jones moved to The Grange, North End Road, Fulham, in 1867 and the sideboard is shown there, in the dining room, with a rectangular mirror above, in T.M. Rooke's watercolour of 1898 (private collection). The sideboard was given to the Museum in 1953 by Margaret Mackail, daughter of Edward and Georgiana.\r\n\r\nIn 1971 this cabinet was on display in the Green Dining Room, originally decorated by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. in 1866.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sideboard, deal, painted with ladies and animals by Edward Burne-Jones, British 1860.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Greenhalgh, Paul (Ed.), Art Nouveau: 1890-1914 .
