The provenance cannot be established, but from its size and shape it appears to have been carved for a sepulchral monument, and is closely related in type and style to the Madonna relief on Francesco di Simone's monument to Alessandro Tartagni (d. 1477) in San Domenico Maggiore at Bologna. The original marble was probably intended for a similar sepulchral monument. Another version in painted stucco is in the Museé Jacquemart-André, Paris.","physicalDescription":"The relief which is recessed inside a moulded border has a concave ground, shows the Virgin seated frontally in full-length, gazing down at the Child, who is supported on her left knee and arm.
