Many of his drawings have a topographical element, which serves as a backdrop for the various human encounters depicted. However, Rowlandson also made a small number of purely topographical views. He made a tour of Wales in the summer of 1797 and visited many historic sites including Chepstow in the Wye Valley in Monmouthshire, the town depicted in this vigorous pen and wash drawing.","physicalDescription":"Drawing in pen and wash on paper of boats on a beach with a village rising behind.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rowlandson, Thomas","id":"A2367"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"wash technique","id":"AAT182748"},{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen, ink and wash on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Landscapes","id":"THES250800"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2009CE1646","2023NP5890"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH (VA)","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"WD","shelf":"51","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1797","earliest":"1792-01-01","latest":"1801-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Presented through The Art Fund by Professor Luke Herrmann (from the Bruce Ingram Collection)","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"14.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"23.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Presented through The Art Fund by Professor Luke Herrmann (from the Bruce Ingram Collection)","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing, Chepstow, by Thomas Rowlandson, ca. 1797.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Chepstow","id":"x33840"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.166-2002"],"accessionNumberNum":"166","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2002,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-23","recordCreationDate":"2002-06-14","availableToBook":false}}
