The flat, everted rim is almost the same diameter as the base.\r\n\r\nThe base is decorated with six engraved roundels each enclosing trilobed buds.  On the body each section framed by the mouldings features eight roundels.  Each roundel consists of a copper-inlaid moon crescent, the horns joining together to form a circle.  within each circle is a triangular motif with incurving sides.\r\n\r\nOn the rim four elongated 'coffin-shaped'  hexagons moulded in low relief divide the rim into four.  In each, enclosed by double fillets, are sections of an engraved epigraphic frieze, within horizontal cartocuches with incurving sides, on a ground of foliate scrolls.\r\n\r\nPatina: purplish brown resulting from oxidation","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"},{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"inlay (process)","id":"AAT53850"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze cast in one, engraved with champlevé designs and partly inlaid with copper","categories":[{"text":"Islam","id":"THES48932"}],"styles":[{"text":"Iranian","id":"x35873"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AN7982"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES367356"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Mortar","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Khorasan","id":"THES412603"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"12th century","earliest":"1100-01-01","latest":"1200-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"18.1 - 18.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"26.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of opening","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"26.75 - 27.85","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of base","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"Persian","medium":"","method":"engraved","position":"rim","script":"thuluth","translation":"Might, auspicious fate, good fortune, lucky star, integrity","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Persian; thuluth; rim; engraved"}],"objectHistory":"Purchased for £2 15d from Mr Sidney Churchill, Tehran, 12 October 1886\n\nHistorical significance: A similar piece is preserved in the Muzim-i Melli at Kabul in Afghanistan. \r\nA related piece, much more crudely decorated, is in the Louvres reserves.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bronze, with engraved champlevé designs partly inlaid with copper.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Melikian-Chirvani, A.S. <u>Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World,</u> London:HMSO, 1982, p.109-110, ISBN 0 11 290252 9"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"bronze, cast, engraved & inlaid with copper, Iran (Khorasan), 12th c.\r\nThe inscription in Khorasanian thuluth script calls God's blessings upon the unnamed owner.\r\nA similar mortar is in the Muzim-i Rawza at Ghazni in Afghanistan.","date":{"text":"Used until 09/2002","earliest":"2002-09-01","latest":"2002-09-30"}}],"partNumbers":["948-1886"],"accessionNumberNum":"948","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1886,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-10-02","recordCreationDate":"2002-05-30","availableToBook":true}}
