He is bearded and is clothed only in a loin cloth which is draped between his legs. He rests his hands on his splayed out knees.  The  wings are spread out behind him overshooting the width of the plinth The feathers are rather crudely rendered with a rope-like moulding across the top over two rows of short pointed feathers with incised lines. The main long  feathers hang beneath these. The figure has broad shoulders and muscular arms. The piece was shown at the Royal Academy Indian Art Exhibition at Burlington House, 1947-48, No 119.","historicalContext":"Atlantes figures in Gandharan art ( so called as they resemble classical figures carved as architectural supports), or otherwise termed as Atlas figures after the classical figure who supported the globe, both of which appear to have influenced the Gandharan carvings.
