After Christ had been taken down from the Cross, his body was prepared and laid in a tomb. Here St John the Evangelist supports the Virgin Mary while Mary Magdalene kneels before the tomb. The two figures in coloured garments holding the body are probably Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Joseph of Arimathea was a wealthy and devout Jew who obtained permission to take Jesus’ body and prepare it for burial. According to the Gospel of St John, Nicodemus helped him.\r\n\r\nIn the middle of the period 1500-1600, when this panel was made, new techniques for producing decorated glass were introduced. Glassmakers used paints known as 'enamels' to paint directly onto the glass, similar to painting onto a canvas. The colours were produced by adding metallic oxides to a ground glass (frit) mixture and the resulting colour range included the delicate pinks, reds and purples shown here.","physicalDescription":"Stained glass panel, in dark brown, silver-yellow, blue and green enamel, and needle point, depicting  The Entombment.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"staining","id":"AAT53058"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stained glass","categories":[{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"},{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AL0041","2006AL0031"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES304403"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1550","earliest":"1545-01-01","latest":"1554-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"538-1907","id":"O65240"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"539-1907","id":"O65242"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"38.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sight","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"26.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sight","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"7.9","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"in wooden frame with 538-1907 and 539-1907","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"64.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"wood frame (with 538 & 539-1907)","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"93.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"wood frame (with 538 & 539-1907)","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"wood frame (with 538 & 539-1907)","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Weight is approximate and includes bubblewrap and Correx packing for decant.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought from the Trustees of the Massey-Mainwaring Estate.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Stained Glass panel depicting The Entombment, German, ca.1550","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Foister, Susan, Art of Light: German Renaissance Stained Glass, London: The National Gallery, 2008.","id":"AUTH347591"},"details":"p.15","free":""}],"production":"Based on one of the series of woodcuts of the Passion by Albrecht Durer.","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Jesus Christ","id":"N1515"},{"text":"Mary (Virgin Mary)","id":"N480"},{"text":"Mary Magdalene (Saint)","id":"N482"},{"text":"John (Saint John the Evangelist)","id":"N103"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[{"text":"The Entombment","id":"V84"}],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"AAT73711"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["540-1907"],"accessionNumberNum":"540","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1907,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-12","recordCreationDate":"2002-05-08","availableToBook":true}}
