The figure here is St Jerome, one of the four Fathers of the Western Church, in his study. One of the leading biblical scholars, he was responsible for gathering together what are known as the canonical books of the Bible. \r\n\r\nSt Jerome died in AD 420. He is often depicted, as here, with a lion. An early legend records that he pulled a thorn out of a lion's paw and consequently the lion became his devoted friend.","physicalDescription":"Stained glass panel, in brown enamel with silver yellow stain, and needle point, depicting St. Jerome reading at a double desk beside a couched lion.
