The textured hammered copper surface is also typical of the style, which celebrated hand-working techniques. \r\n\r\nErnestine Mills (1871-1959), who designed and made it, learned her enamelling techniques from Alexander Fisher (1864-1936), a leading Arts and Crafts enameller and silversmith. She was also a very active suffragette. (The suffragettes campaigned for the right for adult women to vote in general elections.) \r\n\r\nFor a number of years, she was vice-president of the Craft section of the Society of Woman Artists. She produced a large amount of work, including jewellery, for the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). The Pankhurst family founded this militant suffragette organisation in Manchester in 1903.","physicalDescription":"Copper mirror frame housing an oval mirror in the centre, surrounded by enamel inserts depicting peacocks and vines.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mills, Ernestine","id":"A6007"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Enamelled copper","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[{"text":"Arts and Crafts","id":"AAT21205"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AG6832","2006AG6831"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Mirror","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1900-1905","earliest":"1900-01-01","latest":"1905-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Ernestine Mills Gift","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"30.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"28/06/2021","earliest":"2021-06-28","latest":"2021-06-28"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"39.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"28/06/2021","earliest":"2021-06-28","latest":"2021-06-28"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3.95","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"28/06/2021","earliest":"2021-06-28","latest":"2021-06-28"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Exhibition R.F.2002/1174","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Oval mirror in a frame of enamelled copper panels, London, 1900-05, designed and made by Ernestine Mills.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Reason For Production: Private","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.136-1958"],"accessionNumberNum":"136","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1958,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2016JF7379"],"recordModificationDate":"2026-02-09","recordCreationDate":"2002-04-11","availableToBook":false}}
