Lory, widow of Frederick Burton Pendarves Lory, CIE, who served in India from 1901 until 1930 as a tutor and teacher rising within the Indian Educational Service to be Director of Public Instruction, Bombay. He began his career as Principal at Elphinstone High School, Bombay in 1901, tutor and guardian to the two young princes of Jamkhandi, (now Jamakhandi), Karnataka, 1902, headmaster of Poona High School, 1903 from where he rose to be Director of Public Instruction, Bombay in 1923. On his retirement he was made a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire and retired to England where he died in 1954. The collection at the V&amp;A comprises 153 objects, of which this figure is described as 'brass, W. India, 19th century'.
