Hans Collaert, one of the leading ornament engravers in Antwerp in the mid sixteenth century, participated in this move towards architectural pendant designs, as demonstrated in this set of ten designs. The images that do not include architectural elements are probably meant to serve as the verso for similar pendants. Arabesque designs that decorate these images could have been made with enamel paint or through open metalwork. The numbering on this plate indicates that it is a posthumous edition of the series originally printed by Hans Liefrinck. \r\n","physicalDescription":"Design for a pendant verso with grapevine arabesques and accompanied by a design for a pair of fan shaped ornaments.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hans Collaert","id":"A38404"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Hans Collaert","id":"A38404"},"association":{"text":"engraver","id":"AAT25165"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Hans Liefrinck","id":"A29083"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Theodoor Galle","id":"A38392"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":"this edition"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"engraving","categories":[{"text":"Ornament prints","id":"THES49038"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2013GL5432"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EO","shelf":"120","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Antwerp","id":"x28724"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"mid 16th century","earliest":"1525-01-01","latest":"1575-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"original publication"},{"date":{"text":"before 1573","earliest":null,"latest":"1572-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1604","earliest":"1604-01-01","latest":"1604-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"this edition"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"cut to","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"cut to","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"\"H.C\"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"lower left "},{"content":"\"3\"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"lower right "}],"objectHistory":"Pendants with architectural decoration can still be seen in various collections, including the British Museum.
