In 1862 Cadart established the Société des Aquafortistes (Society of Etchers) with Joseph Jules Luquet (1824-1904) and the printer Auguste Delâtre (1822–1907) with the aim of promoting the practice of etching to artists and the general public. Etching had been practised by artists since the late fifteenth century, but by the nineteenth century its popularity declined with the rise of lithography and the dominance of reproductive engraving. By the 1860s in France, however, a significant revival was underway. The nineteenth century etching revival, which occurred in France, Britain, and America, was characterised by artists reclaimed etching as an autonomous art form, aligning themselves with the tradition of the ‘peintre-graveur’ (painter-printmaker) and looking to earlier great masters of the medium, like Rembrandt. In this renewed context, etching was valued for its immediacy and originality, ideas that informed the foundation of the Société des Aquafortistes and its associated publications. Cadart’s partnership with Luce lasted just two years, from 1867 to 1869, however he continued to publish several series of original etchings into the 1870s.\r\n12 Croquis a L’Eau-Forte par Maxime Lalanne contains 12 etchings by the French artist Maxime Lalanne depicting landscapes, seascapes, and views of towns. Five in the suite illustrate the coast in Calvados, two are of the banks of the Seine, and the five remaining prints depict other scenes in Normandy, Bordeaux, and Allier. This focus on landscapes aligns with the interests of the etching revivalists to show how the art form can reproduce scenes from life. Cadart’s publication of a group of etchings by Lalanne reflects the high esteem the artist was held in. In his seminal publication of 1868, Etching and Etchers, Philip Gilbert Hamerton enthused that ‘no one ever etched so gracefully as Maxime Lalanne’. Indeed, Lalanne’s dedication to promoting etching among artists can be seen through the success of his technical manual on the art form Traité de la gravure à l’eau-forte, first published in 1866, a twelfth edition of which was published in 2010. ","physicalDescription":"A view of a street with buildings on either side in a village, with three horses standing to the left and a figure on a balcony to the right.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lalanne, Maxime","id":"AUTH352495"},"association":{"text":"printmaker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Cadart","id":"A34159"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching (printing process)","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"French","id":"AAT111188"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2017KK6271"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"UpObjectStore","id":"THES393033"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1869","earliest":"1869-01-01","latest":"1869-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"13.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"54.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"35.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'A Cusset (Allier)' (In Cusset (Allier)), etching with surface tone by Maxime Lalanne, second state of seven, published by Cadart for 12 Croquis a L'Eau-Forte par Maxime Lalanne, Paris, 1869","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Laran, Jean. Inventaire de Fonds Français après 1800.
