In the centre of the tracery are Adam in the Garden of Eden and Moses or Christ holding up the Ten Commandments flanked by figures of angels. The Annunciation, the Nativity, the Batism of Christ and the Temptation of Christ are depicted from left to right in the top of the main lights. Eve giving the apple to Adam, the figure of John Milton (1608-74) and Mary Powell, his wife, both in a version of seventeeth-century costume, and the Expulsion of Adam and Eve are depicted from left to right in the middle of the main lights. Scenes probably from 'Paradise Lost' or its sequl, 'Paradise Regained' by John Milton, are depicted from left to right at the bottom of the main lights. The designs are drawn in pen and ink and watercolour on a large sheet of cream-coloured paper stuck to a small rectangular card support. There is a dark grey frame around the front of the design. The frame is attached to the back of the card support by masking tape.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Clayton, John Richard","id":"A5956"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Bell, Alfred","id":"A9812"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Clayton & Bell","id":"A5966"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT11051"},{"text":"wove paper","id":"AAT14187"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink and wash on wove paper, mounted on card","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2014GY1269"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"CG","shelf":"77","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Design for stained glass","id":"THES277590"}],[{"text":"Designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1855-1895","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1895-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by The Ashmolean Museum from the estate of the late Brian Miller","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"47.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"including mount","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"34.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"including mount","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"34.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"without mount","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"23.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"without mount","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'JOHN .
