It was probably for the missing figure of the twenty-second Tirthankara- Neminatha, which would have occupied the central part under the canopy, from which hangs a deep fringe of semi-circular swags of jewels.  Flanking this niche are two attendants on either side holding flywhists.   Next to them are two Two Tirthankaras in standing poses (Kayotsarga).  They have snake hoods which would imply that they may be either Parsvantha and Suparvanatha. Over the middle canopy is a semicircular group  of three heavenly musicians with drums and two elephants with riders on either side.  There are two  large Tirthankaras in padmasana pose on either side with about 18 other small Tirthankaras in the similar poses around the frame of this unique backplate.
