However, it is very unlikely that a bride in 1835 would wear a dress that was over a decade out of fashion. Up until the mid-20th century, fashion-conscious wedding clothing in the Western world was traditionaly as new and up-to-date as possible. Many people - especially those living in towns and urban environments - were very aware of the latest fashions, so even those on limited incomes made every effort to present smartly, and wedding clothing was traditionally new and as smart and fashionable as possible. Even a remade/remodelled older dress or reused fabric would have been made to look as modish as possible.\n\nEliza Ann's sister Maria Ann Rayden (1797-1861) married James Stone on 9 September 1818. The style of this dress is a little too fashionable for it to have been worn much earlier than 1822; although there is a slim possibility that this was worn by Maria Ann Rayden. A fourth Rayden sibling, James Rayden, married Sarah Robinson in 1836, which is far too late for this dress to have been credibly worn for that ceremony. Assuming that the dress was worn by a Rayden family bride, this leaves Wiliam Rayden's 1822 bride Sarah Ann Markett as the most likely wearer.\n\n- Daniel Milford-Cottam, 22/09/2025\n\nHistorical significance: This is a fine example of an 1820s wedding dress. An interesting feature is the detachable sleeves which allow the dresss to be adapted for evening wear and demonstrate the economical use of clothing in the early 19th century. There is also evidence that this dress may have been reused at a later date as the lacing at the back and whalebone struts are consistent with fashions of the 1890s. This adds to its cultural value and interest to researchers as well as the general public. Although our wedding dress collection is large, the early 19th century is not well represented.
