He studied at the Dresdner Akademie für Kunsthandwerk (Dresden Arts & Crafts Academy) where he came into contact with Expressionist painting, the Deutsche Werkbund and the influence of the Bauhaus design school. He set up the 'Werkstätten Richard Süssmuth-Glaskunst, Penzig in Schlesien' in 1924. It was supplied with glass to Süssmuth's designs by the Penzig-Adler-Hütte.  His workshops destroyed, in 1946 he moved to Immenhausen near Kassel where he established a new glassworks, producing both the glass and the decoration.  He specialised in tableware, winning a Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale of 1954 for his drinking glass service AE.  During the 1930s his most characteristic glass is, as here, of simple forms with abbreviated but stylish decoration.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["CIRC.178-1932"],"accessionNumberNum":"178","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1932,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Glass gallery number","id":"THES50491"},"number":"9536"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-02","recordCreationDate":"1997-12-13","availableToBook":false}}
