Wood covered with leather, gilded and partly picked out with transparent colour. \n\nThe substrate consists of a double ply layer of thin timber strips, laid in opposing directions and glued. Over the leather there is a thin coating of gesso, modelled in slight relief. A leather arm grip (now missing) and handle grip are attached to a padded leather support with iron rivets. \n\nThe front is painted and gilded (and varnished) with a design of scrolling stems in an arabesque pattern (including some knotted hearts), a central cartouche surrounded by 6 spiky leaf motifs (of two patterns), with a red background, with some green details. Around the edge is a wide gold band with scrolling leafy stems, and at the back edge is a narrow band with leaf ornament.\n\nThe reverse is lined with leather on a gesso ground, the leather painted in a mottled or marbled effect, with a broad yellow polychromed band around the inner rim.\n\nOn the front, an area of leather is missing near the centre.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"leather","id":"AAT11845"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"Medieval and renaissance","id":"THES271264"},{"text":"Leather","id":"THES49030"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2014HG6975","2014HG6976"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES344437"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Parade shield","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Venice","id":"x29237"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1595-1605","earliest":"1595-01-01","latest":"1605-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"58","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"24/10/14","earliest":"2014-10-24","latest":"2014-10-24"},"part":"","note":"Circumference varies 56-58cm"},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"13","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought for £2 10s from JC Robinson\r\n\r\nThis shield is one of a large set made for the bodyguard of Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, Prince archbishop of Salzburg (1587-1611).
