The completed monument includes a small niche, high up on the obelisk, containing a portrait head of Richard's son George Brodrepp (d. 1739). Beaminster: Mapperton Estate, 2021","id":"AUTH375496"},"details":"pp. 34-5","free":"Soon after the death of Richard III in 1737, Hester Brodrepp commissioned a monument for him to be installed at Mapperton. She chose the Flemish sculptor Peter Scheemakers, who had studied in Rome and made his name on his arrival in London in c. 1720 with the carving of the huge monument to the Duke of Buckingham in Westminster Abbey. A design for the Brodrepp monument shows a flat plinth carrying the inscription upon which a tall obelisk in dark marble provides the background for tw putti surrounding the draped oval relief of his portrait. The most influential model of this type was Rysbrack's monument to the poet John Gay, just unveiled in the Abbey in 1737. The  monument as it stands at Mapperton differs from the surviving drawing by the inclusion, high up on the obelisk, of a small niche containing a frontal head of George, so it was clearly not erected before his death in 1739. The role of Hester, now Strode, 'One of the Daughters and Coheiresses of Dr. Wm. Wake late Arch Bishop of Canterbury' is prominent on the inscription of this monument that commemorates her husband, her son George, and a daughter, named Etheldred for her grandmother, who died as a child twenty years before.
