It is formed entirely from hexagonally jointed basalt columns within a Paleocene lava flow, similar in structure to the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland and those of nearby Ulva.\n Sir Walter Scott described Fingal's Cave as \"one of the most extraordinary places I ever beheld. It exceeded, in my mind, every description I had heard of it… composed entirely of basaltic pillars as high as the roof of a cathedral, and running deep into the rock, eternally swept by a deep and swelling sea, and paved, as it were, with ruddy marble, [it] baffles all description.\""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Hebrides","id":"x45879"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"x29130"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"caves","id":"AAT8746"},{"text":"islands","id":"AAT8791"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":["'Scott's Poetical Works' - Sir Walter Scott"],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.4413-1946"],"accessionNumberNum":"4413","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1946,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Rawlinson number (Mummery Bequest)","id":"THES252801"},"number":"R512"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-02","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
