It helped to establish his reputation as a leading designer and maker of furniture in the fashionable Art Nouveau style. Advocates of this new style looked to nature as the primary source of inspiration in design. \r\n\r\nThe form of the cabinet, which is not directly based on any historical precedent, shows Majorelle’s inventiveness. The marquetry of human figures, trees and flowers demonstrates his enthusiasm for the natural world. Majorelle used marquetry to create large-scale pictorial panels, very different from the small-scale, formal patterns used by many cabinetmakers working in more traditional historical styles.","physicalDescription":"Cabinet with two cupboards set one above the other, separated by an open, shelf section and surmounted by an enclosed shelf or alcove at cresting level. The frame is carved with fronds and leaves of water-lily and the two front panels show marquetry panels of women bathers amongst trees on the edge of a pond on the upper panel, and of water-lilies on the lower panel. The back of each shelf section is lined with pleated silk.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Majorelle, Louis","id":"A5654"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"},{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"},{"text":"amboyna","id":"x37994"},{"text":"kingwood","id":"x35086"},{"text":"pearwood","id":"x34734"},{"text":"sycamore","id":"AAT12357"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cabinet-making","id":"AAT53607"},{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"veneered","id":"AAT53878"},{"text":"marquetry","id":"AAT53853"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carcase of mahogany and oak, veneered with kingwood and amboyna and with marquetry of pearwood, amboyna, sycamore and other woods","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Nouveau","id":"AAT21430"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2012FJ0286","2006BD4005","2017JU2514"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344761"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES302809"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341852"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344761"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cabinet","id":""}],[{"text":"Keys","id":""}],[{"text":"Cabinet (shelf)","id":""}],[{"text":"Cabinet (shelf)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Nancy","id":"x29017"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1900","earliest":"1900-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir George Donaldson","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"171.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"89.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"42.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"65","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"with door slightly ajar","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"LW 19.11.09","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"L.
