It was also the subject of an illustration to an article written the same year by its maker, Emile Gallé. The text, on modern furniture decorated after nature, for <i>La Revue des Arts decoratifs</i>, served as a statement of Gallé’s philosophy of furniture design. The piece was called the ‘Ipomoea’ commode after the botanical name of the Morning Glory flowers that trail across the marquetry panels. Gallé believed passionately in nature as the proper source of inspiration for designers.","physicalDescription":"A commode on four tall legs joined by an interlaced stretcher, with two long drawers. The drawer fronts, sides, back and top are veneered with marquetry panels showing trailing foliage and flowers, in oak, walnut, Hungarian ash, kingwood, maple, harewood and mother-of-pearl, on a carcase of oak. On the front, the marquetry panel covers both drawers. The drawer linings are of oak and willow, lined with satinwood.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gallé, Emile","id":"A655"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"},{"text":"willow","id":"AAT12498"},{"text":"satinwood","id":"AAT12451"},{"text":"walnut","id":"AAT12476"},{"text":"kingwood","id":"x35086"},{"text":"ash","id":"AAT164025"},{"text":"maple","id":"AAT12236"},{"text":"mother-of-pearl","id":"AAT11835"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cabinet-making","id":"AAT53607"},{"text":"turned","id":"AAT53158"},{"text":"veneered","id":"AAT53878"},{"text":"marquetry","id":"AAT53853"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Marquetry of several different woods on a carcase of oak and willow","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Nouveau","id":"AAT21430"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006BF8529","2017JU2503","2010EK2405"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343146"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES302809"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343146"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343146"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Commode","id":""}],[{"text":"Key","id":"x39253"}],[{"text":"Commode (drawer)","id":""}],[{"text":"Commode (drawer)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Nancy","id":"x29017"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1900","earliest":"1900-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir George Donaldson","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"87","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"88","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"57","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from departmental catalogues.
