He commissioned some of the most brilliant artists of the period. The <i>Histoire Naturelle</i> (Natural History) written by the 18th-century French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was scientifically obsolete by the 20th century, but had become a classic of French literature with its attempt to codify the natural world, often by means of allegory. Picasso's illustrations follow the spirit of the text: many of them are quirky and humorous and show anthropomorphic tendencies.","physicalDescription":"Print of a goldfinch and a branch","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Picasso, Pablo","id":"A7073"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Lacouriere, Roger","id":"A6991"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Fabiani, Alberto","id":"A4851"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Picasso, Pablo","id":"N12604"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"sugar aquatint","id":"AAT190346"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sugar aquatint on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Anthropomorphism","id":"THES252998"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2011EV0440","2018KT5918"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"80","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"prints","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"designed and printed","id":"x37573"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1942","earliest":"1942-01-01","latest":"1942-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1936","earliest":"1936-01-01","latest":"1936-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"14.25","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"11","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Illustration to Buffon's 'Histoire Naturelle', drawn on the plate by Picasso, etched in sugar aquatint by Roger Lacourière and published by Fabiani, Paris, 1942","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Le Chardonneret', sugar aquatint by Pablo Picasso, 1936, from a series illustrating the Comte de Buffon's 'Histoire Naturelle', published by Fabiani, Paris, 1942.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Victoria and Albert Museum, Department of Engraving, Illustration and Design & Department of Paintings, Accessions 1947</u>, London: HMSO, 1950."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"Georges Bloch, Pablo Picasso Catalogue de l'oeuvre grave et lithographie, Vol. I, 1904-1967, Vol. II, 1966-1069, Berne, 1968, 1971.
