The male youth on the left strides forward with monumental strength and indifference, to illustrate the relentless march of time. Time holds hands with the female figure of Death, who in the finished oil paintings can be better seen gazing down at freshly cut flowers, leaves and blossoms. Judgement can be identified by both her set of scales and the blindfold she wears to symbolise impartiality.","physicalDescription":"A drawing in red chalk, showing three allegorical figures, of whom Time (male) and Death (female) stand in the foreground, with Judgement (female) behind and above them.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Watts, George Frederick (OM, RA)","id":"A9772"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"red chalk","id":"AAT80064"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Red chalk","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[{"text":"Late Victorian","id":"AAT21235"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2012FH3969","2018LH0220"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"PD","shelf":"152","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1891","earliest":"1891-01-01","latest":"1891-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by H. The first was begun around 1870 and given to the National Gallery of Canada in 1887. The second was given to St. Paul's Cathedral in 1897 and the third to the Tate Gallery, London, in 1900. A mosaic replica was also presented to the Church of St. Jude's, Whitechapel. This drawing represents an intermediate stage between the first large painting and the latter two, with Time's drapery and other details closely following the former.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"George Frederick Watts; Time, Death and Judgement, 1891.
