PDAs were marketed from the mid-1980s as organisational tools, but their greater affordability in the late-1990s and early-2000s meant they became, at the same time, fashionable accessories. The Handspring Visor was available in a range of translucent, coloured plastic cases, inside of which the complex computer technology is concealed. In this way, it is aesthetically related to the design of the Apple iMac G3 (see W.29-2008), which was more-or-less contemporary. The Visor was conceived by the designers of the PalmPilot (1997), one of the fastest-selling computer products ever.","physicalDescription":"Small, handheld computer with a touch-sensitive LCD (liquid crystal display) screen; the body is made of orange plastic.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Handspring International","id":"C2175"},"association":{"text":"Maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"polypropylene","id":"AAT14489"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Polypropylene, metals, electrical and computer components","categories":[{"text":"Plastic","id":"THES49026"},{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2008BT4277"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"74","id":"THES49720"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"PLINTH","box":""},{"current":{"text":"74","id":"THES49720"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"PLINTH","box":""},{"current":{"text":"74","id":"THES49720"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"PLINTH","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES302995"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES302995"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES302995"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES302995"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404206"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Handheld computer","id":""}],[{"text":"Cradle","id":""}],[{"text":"Removable plastic cover","id":""}],[{"text":"Slipcase","id":""}],[{"text":"Software","id":""}],[{"text":"Printed material","id":""}],[{"text":"Packaging","id":""}],[{"text":"Stylus","id":"AAT22483"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2000","earliest":"2000-01-01","latest":"2000-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the manufacturer","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"cradle","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"cradle","note":"cable unmeasured"},{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"cradle","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"11","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"stylus","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"0.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"stylus","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"handheld computer","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"handheld computer","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"handheld computer","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Handspring Visor handheld computer; made in USA.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Working at home, in the office, and on the move\n\nAn early handheld, portable computer, the Handspring Visor was a precursor to the smart devices we use today that enable us to work from anywhere.
