To ensure the multi-colour blocks registered with the ‘key’ image, he printed an impression from the key block onto the other two to guide his cutting; the image is visible in the uncut areas of these blocks. Bawden applied more than one colour to the blocks in sequence, printing, for example, blue over red, brown over green, red over purple.
