She was in fact from South Norwood and attended the Slade School of Art in London. In 1917 she met a much younger man, Peter Llewelyn Davies, who had been the inspiration for J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. Davies went on to become a publisher, commissioning her to create the illustrations for<i> A Sentimental Journey</i> and other texts. \n\nThe image relates to the novel's final chapter, entitled The Case of Delicacy. Parson Yorick is obliged to share his hotel room with a lady and her maid, so they meet to draw up a set of house rules. \"We sat down to supper; and had we not had more generous wine to it than a little inn in Savoy could have furnished, our tongues would have been tied up, till necessity herself had set them at liberty - but the lady having a few bottles of Burgundy in her voiture sent down her fille de chambre for a couple of them...\" Yorick and the lady finally retire to separate beds and a night of erotic tension, with the maid close at hand.\n\nWilloughby also produced a number of theatrical designs and illustrations in the early 1920s, using the name Vera Petrovna.\n\n","physicalDescription":"Drawing","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Willoughby, Véra","id":"A5099"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"pencil","categories":[{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2018KR6012"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"I","shelf":"139(i)","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1927","earliest":"1927-01-01","latest":"1927-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs. Althea Wolton, the artist's daughter","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"1951","earliest":"1951-01-01","latest":"1951-12-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"1951","earliest":"1951-01-01","latest":"1951-12-31"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Véra Willoughby.
