The Museum bought it directly from the exhibition for £75. At that time the Museum bought many modern pieces that demonstrated fine craftsmanship, to serve as inspiration for modern designers and carvers.\r\n\r\nProfessor Pietro Giusti exhibited several carved frames in a similar style, and was awarded a medal at the exhibition. All the frames were carved, as this one is, in the style of about 1500. Siena had always been famous for wood carvers. There were several carving workshops there in the middle of the 19th century, when woodcarving was undergoing a revival all over Europe. They produced fine-quality work in historic styles, mainly for rich, middle-class customers. The finer details of the carving are shown in relief against a gilded ground. \n\nAt the 1862 International Exhibition Giusti exhibited the frame together with the painting of the Virgin and Child with the Infant Baptist. Although the painting is contemporary with the style of the frame, it was heavily over-painted in the middle of the 19th century.","physicalDescription":"A frame of tabernacle form, with semi-circular pediment, carved in walnut, with panels of Renaissance ornament in relief against a gilded ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Giusti, Pietro (Prof.)","id":"A11920"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"walnut","id":"AAT12476"},{"text":"gold leaf","id":"x33207"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved and gilded walnut","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Frames","id":"THES48949"}],"styles":[{"text":"Renaissance Revival","id":"AAT21464"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006BF8379","2017JV9796","2017JV9797","2017JV9798","2017JV9799","2017JV9801"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SM012","id":"THES305006"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"SM012","id":"THES305006"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"frame","id":"AAT189814"}],[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Siena","id":"x30333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1862","earliest":"1862-01-01","latest":"1862-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"240","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"approx.","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"94","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"approx.","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"20","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"approx.","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements need to be checked in gallery when conditions are easier","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"1862","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"Incised","position":"On cartouche at base of mirror","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Date","note":"Date; On cartouche at base of mirror; Incised"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Frame of tabernacle form, containing painting of Virgin and Child, in Renaissance style, of carved walnut, some of the carving against a stippled, gilded ground; Italian, Siena, 1862, made by Professor Pietro Giusti, for the London Exhibition, 1862","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Waring, J.
