These flutes were fitted with a number of separate keys (unlike the interlinking ones used in the Boehm system) and noted for their wider holes which improved the tone and volume. This example was made of cocus wood, a West Indian timber, widely used in Britain for making wind-instruments from about 1830 onwards.","physicalDescription":"\"Cocus wood, in four joints, silver mounted. The second, fourth and fifth holes are of relatively large diameter (Nicholson's Improvement [which improved the tone and volume by widening these holes]). Tuning slide in the head. Eight keys mounted on blocks in the wood. The keys are of saltspoon shape save for the lowest two, which have riveted pewter plugs in the older manner for these keys.\" Anthony Baines,<i>Catalogue of Musical Instruments in the Victoria and Albert Museum - Part II: Non-keyboard instruments</i> (London, 1998), p. 93.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Prowse, Thomas","id":"A23937"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x37726"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cocus wood","id":"x43389"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"pewter","id":"AAT10979"}],"techniques":[{"text":"boring","id":"AAT53151"},{"text":"turning","id":"AAT53158"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"turned and bored cocus wood; silver keys with pewter plugs.","categories":[{"text":"Musical instruments","id":"THES48919"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2022NH0804","2010EB7388","2010EB7160","2010EB7159","2010EB7158","2010EB7157","2010EB7156","2010EB7155","2010EB7154"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CA001","id":"THES388376"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Flute","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"about 1835","earliest":"1835-01-01","latest":"1835-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given to the Museum by R.Parker, Esq.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"66","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Taken from Anthony Baines: <i>Catalogue of Musical Instruments in the Victoria and Albert Museum - Part II: Non-keyboard instruments.</i> (London, 1998), p. 93","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"C.Nicholsons Improved 4480 T.Prowse.
