In 1691 he accompanied William III (reigned 1688-1702) to Holland as one of the <i>hautboys</i>, or oboe-players, in his retinue. On his death in May 1731, the London press hailed Bressan as 'that celebrated artist in making flutes'. This flute is a particularly fine example of his work, made of ebony ornately inlaid with silver wire.","physicalDescription":"Flute of ebony in four pieces mounted in silver. The mouth-hole, the six finger-holes and the divisions between the parts are decorated in inlaid silver wire with bands of interlacing scrolls enriched with annulets, dots and other devices; the centre of each portion is similarly ornamented. The flute has one silver key.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bressan, Pierre Jaillard","id":"A11851"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"turning","id":"AAT53158"},{"text":"inlay","id":"AAT53850"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Turned ebony, inlaid with silver filigree in scroll patterns, with five silver mounts","categories":[{"text":"Musical instruments","id":"THES48919"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AY9289","2011EM5821","2006AN4263","2011EM5820","2006AD0808","2018KX4412"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"Q","id":"THES296998"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Flute","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1700","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1704-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Alfred Branton Esq.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"61.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1.92","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bore of head joint","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1.64","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bore of lower end of foot","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"P.I./Bressan","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"stamped","position":"On each of the four joints","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On each of the four joints; stamped"}],"objectHistory":"Bought for £3 from Alfred Branton, East Dulwich.
