It is by George Barbier, one of the most prominent French illustrators of the early 20th century. To illustrate Verlaine's poem entitled 'Letter' which reads as a love letter of the author to his lover, Barbier has chosen to depict a lady in 18th-century dress. Seated on a couch, she is holding the letter she has just read. 18th-century fashion was a constant source of inspiration for Barbier, who also illustrated Choderlos de Laclos's epistolary novel, Dangerous Liaisons (Les liaisons dangereuses) for an edition which was published in 1934.
