Memphis was the first to introduce garish colours and non-traditional shapes which defined 1980s post-modern design. Postmodernism rejected the purity and severity of functionalist modernism by reintroducing wit and excess to design.\r\n\r\nThe chairs were available in a number of colours and could be tailored to fit client specifications. This chair is from the 'Westside' collection which included a lounge chair, a sofa, settee and a Central Park Table. They were designed to be used in offices, lounge areas and the home.","physicalDescription":"Foam armchair in a geometric form, with wool upholstery in yellow, red and black.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sottsass, Ettore","id":"A920"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Knoll Studio","id":"A5677"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"foam rubber","id":"AAT14562"},{"text":"wool","id":"AAT243430"}],"techniques":[{"text":"upholstery","id":"x37978"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Foam, with wool upholstery","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"post modern","id":"AAT22208"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AU6703"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES300860"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Armchair","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1983","earliest":"1983-01-01","latest":"1983-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1983","earliest":"1983-01-01","latest":"1983-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Knoll International","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"74","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"99","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"71","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Armchair, model Westside Lounge, designed by Ettore Sottsass and manufactured by the Knoll Studio.
