They were famous for their fine cabinet-making and their highly decorative marquetry. Small items, such as boxes and toilet mirrors, formed a significant part of their output, to judge by the many that survive. A number of these items include monograms or coats of arms in the marquetry design, showing that they were made to commission. This box, for example, carries the arms of the Fayet family.\r\nThe design of the marquetry on this box would have seemed quite old-fashioned in 1750. The tight, leafy scrolls show the influence of Italian marquetry, as well as French marquetry of the first half of the eighteenth century. The burr ash used for the main veneer was originally stained green, and the other elements of the marquetry would also have been stained in bright colours, much closer to the natural colouring of the flowers and leaves it depicts.","physicalDescription":"Long, narrow box, with hinged lid,of walnut, veneered with green-stained burr ash, with marquetry of sycamore and amaranth, with designs of scrolls and flowers, the centre of the top with a design of a coat of arms under a coronet","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hache, Pierre","id":"A11343"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Sycamore","id":"AAT12357"},{"text":"Amaranth","id":"AAT12419"},{"text":"Burr ash","id":"x37610"},{"text":"Steel","id":"AAT133751"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Joinery","id":"x36614"},{"text":"Veneering","id":"AAT53878"},{"text":"Marquetry","id":"AAT53853"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Walnut, veneered in green-stained burr ash, with marquetry of sycamore and amaranth","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[{"text":"Régence","id":"AAT21089"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AM2783","2006AM2782","2011EY1969","2011EY1973","2011EY5845","2011EY5847","2011EY5848","2011EY5849","2011EY5850","2017JR9361","2017JR9362","2017JR9406","2017JT2112"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES302381"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Box","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Grenoble","id":"x37609"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1750","earliest":"1745-01-01","latest":"1754-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"15.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"59.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"19.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements taken from departmental catalogue. The founder of the dynasty, Noël Hache (1630-1675) trained in Calais and worked in Toulouse but in 1695 one of his younger sons Thomas Hache (1664-1747) established a workshop in Grenoble. The family's reputation was at its peak in the second half of the eighteenth century, when the workshops were under the management of Pierre Hache (1705-1766) and Jean-François Hache (1730-1796). This box was made in the middle years of the eighteenth century, just after Pierre had taken over from his father (in 1747). He it was that introduced this highly decorative form of marquetry. \n\nThe attribution to the workshop is clear because of the stamp that was used to identify the pieces. \r\n\r\nPurchased 1905 for £31. 16s. 11d. We know nothing of the history of this particular piece before it came to the Museum. ","historicalContext":"Probably used for the storage of gloves.
