The banded frames to the panels, which show the bandings 'knotted' at the corners, were particularly fashionable in the period. Although the central motif is of musical instruments, this casket is too small to have housed any instrument or even music. The fact that it is fitted with a secret drawer suggests that it may have been used in conjunction with a desk or writing table.","physicalDescription":"A rectangular casket, with hinged lid, raised on low, turned, gilt-brass feet, the sides and top set with marquetry of flowers within frames of marquetry","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"},{"text":"yew","id":"AAT12774"},{"text":"tulipwood","id":"AAT12469"},{"text":"purplewood","id":"AAT12419"},{"text":"holly","id":"AAT12156"},{"text":"sycamore","id":"AAT12357"},{"text":"boxwood","id":"AAT12002"},{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"},{"text":"satiné","id":"x38816"},{"text":"whitebeam","id":"x39769"},{"text":"barberry","id":"x39770"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cabinet-making","id":"AAT53607"},{"text":"veneering","id":"AAT53878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Veneered in tulipwood, purplewood, holly, sycamore, boxwood, ebony, <i>bois satiné</i>, whitebeam, barberry, on a ground of mahogany and yiew; with gilt-bronze mounts","categories":[{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neo-classical","id":"x38958"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2010EB1107","2011EY5851","2011EY5852","2011EY5854","2011EY5855","2011EY5856","2011EY5857","2011EY5865","2011EY5853","2006AM2816","2006AM2815","2019MD3539"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES302382"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES302807"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES302382"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES302382"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Casket","id":""}],[{"text":"Keys","id":""}],[{"text":"drawer","id":"AAT40558"}],[{"text":"lid","id":"AAT45712"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1770-1780","earliest":"1765-01-01","latest":"1780-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by John Jones","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"converted from department register"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"35.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"converted from department register"},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"22.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"converted from department register"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"In the collection of John Jones before 1882","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Casket veneered in tulipwood, with marquetry of flowers and banding, French, ca. 1770-1780","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"flowers","id":"x35571"},{"text":"musical instrument","id":"AAT41620"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"WORK-BOX\r\nFRENCH; about 1775\r\n\r\nVeneered with marquetry of various woods.
