The highly curved, or 'cabriole' legs, and lively carving, with swags of fruit and flowers, are typical of this style. The 5th Lord Leigh commissioned the piece in 1764 for use as an altar table in the chapel at his house, Stoneleigh Abbey, Warwickshire. By that date the Rococo style was no longer the height of fashion, but the table fitted well with the plasterwork and carvings in the chapel, which also featured cherub's heads. The cabinet-making firm William Gomm & Son of Clerkenwell Close, London, made the table, and their bill for £31.50 still survives. The table is now on long-term loan from the V&A to Stoneleigh Abbey.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular mahogany table on four outward curving legs carved with swags of fruit and flowers and scrolls, with a cherub's head on the front.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"William Gomm & Son","id":"A11594"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved mahogany","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[{"text":"Rococo","id":"AAT21155"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AU7101"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"STLA (LOAN)","id":"THES49587"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Altar table","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Clerkenwell","id":"x31567"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1764","earliest":"1764-01-01","latest":"1764-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Trustees of the National Heritage Memorial Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"33","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"49","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"31","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Altar table of carved mahogany by William Gomm & Son, English 1764","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"'Recent acquisitions of furniture and woodwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum'. <u>Burlington Magazine</u> June 1993, vol.
