One of his clients was Sir Godfrey Webster who restored the medieval buildings of Battle Abbey, Sussex, originally built to commemorate the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Sir Godfrey commissioned furniture in appropriate Gothic style from Bullock for his home, including a carved oak throne for the Great Hall, and this table, which may have been supplied for the library. The furniture was probably designed by Richard Bridgens (1785-1846) who collaborated with Bullock over several commissions. The use of oak for the table is typical of Bullock's interest in native woods although it is inlaid in ebony which would have been imported.","physicalDescription":"Oak table with ebony inlay.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bridgens, Richard","id":"A8180"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"probably"},{"name":{"text":"Bullock, George","id":"A1355"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT25370"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"},{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"}],"techniques":[{"text":"inlay (process)","id":"AAT53850"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oak, with ebony inlay","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[{"text":"Gothic Revival","id":"AAT21452"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2017JW4486"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344237"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Table","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1817","earliest":"1812-01-01","latest":"1821-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"77","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"183","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"120.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Table, oak, inlaid with ebony, probably designed by Richard Bridgens, made by George Bullock, London, ca. 1817","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"TABLE \r\nENGLISH; 1815-1818\r\nOak with ebony details\r\n\r\nMade in the workshop of George Bullock.\r\nProbably designed by George Bullock.  \r\n\r\nSupplied as part of the furnishings of Battle Abbey in Sussex.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["W.17-1981"],"accessionNumberNum":"17","accessionNumberPrefix":"W","accessionYear":1981,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2001-04-02","availableToBook":true}}
