Parte Seconda’, was first published by Giovanni Battista Piranesi in Rome in 1748. The original copperplates are in the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, Rome.\n\r\nThis group of views, first published in 1748 as the ‘Antichità Romane de’ Tempi della Repubblica e de’ primi Imperatori’, was issued in several editions during Piranesi’s lifetime. At a date sometime after 1761 the title was altered to ‘Alcune Vedute di Archi Trionfali…’, by which the work is generally known (so as to avoid confusion with the ‘Antichità Romane’ of 1756). The change of title probably occurred towards the end of the artist’s life since his son, Francesco, added the view of the ‘Temple of Minerva Medica’ to the series at the time of the change.\n\r\nLater additions to the group were the view of the ‘Arch of Aosta’ (pl. 4, no. 107), etched in 1775 by Piranesi from a drawing by Sir Roger Newdigate, together with Francesco’s view of the ‘Tempio di Minerva Medica’ (pl. 30). For a set of the later edition, published between 1778 and 1792, in a different numerical order and with two additional plates, see accession numbers: E.4367-4398-1908.\n\r\nAccording to Wilton Ely, these prints, based on sketches made during Piranesi’s travels in Italy, c. 1743–47, and subdivided into “Part I: Ruins outside Rome” and “Part II: Ruins within Rome,” may be considered among the artist’s graphic masterpieces. They possess a unity of and range of experiment lacking in the Varie Vedute and even in the early plates of the larger Vedute di Roma, which probably overlap this series in time. The ‘Archi Trionfali’ show strong evidence of Tiepolo’s decisive influence on Piranesi during the latter’s return visit to Venice in the mid-1740s, together with the first signs of certain compositional ideas which were to be transferred to the larger Vedute in the next decade.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Piranesi, Giovanni Battista","id":"A8740"},"association":{"text":"print-maker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Piranesi, Giovanni Battista","id":"A8740"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching (printing process)","id":"AAT53241"},{"text":"engraving (printing process)","id":"AAT53225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching with engraving, ink on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"}],"styles":[{"text":"Italian","id":"AAT111198"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"SB23","shelf":"SH3","box":"LL/29"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1748","earliest":"1748-01-01","latest":"1748-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Miss H.
