The entire surface of the costume is embroidered in couched metallic threads, which would have been eye-catching, drawing attention to the bride. This two-pieced ensemble derives from a traditional form of Chinese dress worn by women during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), but the structured tailoring shows some influence of Western dressmaking. \r\n\r\nThe motifs adopted in this costume include dragons and phoenixes, recalling the Chinese greeting <i>\"long feng ji xiang</i> (Dragons and phoenixes bring auspicious favours)\".
