The image refers to a scene in Laurence Sterne's A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy(1768), entitled The Grace. After a disaster when his horse loses two shoes, Parson Yorick is obliged to spend the night in a French peasant's house: \n\n\"When supper was over, the old man gave a knock upon the table with the haft of his knife - to bid them prepare for the dance [...] all his life long he had made it a rule, after supper was over, to call out his family to dance and rejoice; believing, he said, that a chearful and contented mind was the best sort of thanks to heaven that an illiterate peasant could pay -\n- Or a learned prelate either, said I.\"\n\nCarter also painted another scene from A Sentimental Journey, using his daughter as the model for Maria. Smith used the painting of Miss Carter as Maria as the basis for another print, published in 1774.\n\n ","physicalDescription":"Print with a depiction of a group of country folk dancing outside a cottage doorway.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"John Raphael Smith","id":"A11512"},"association":{"text":"engraver","id":"AAT25165"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"George Carter","id":"A24953"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Robert Sayer & Co.","id":"A27362"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"mezzotint","id":"AAT53233"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Mezzotint","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2018KR5977"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"PS","shelf":"42","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"18/07/1775","earliest":"1775-07-18","latest":"1775-07-18"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Edgar Seligman","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"46.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"cut","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"56.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"cut","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from Victoria and Albert Museum Department of Prints and Drawings and Department of Paintings, Accessions 1960: Volume 2, Edgar Seligman Gift. London: HMSO, 1966.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'That a Chearfull and Contented Mind is the best thanks an Illiterate Peasant can Pay.
