Thanks to the inscription, we know that this double-sided study, boxed with drawings of the English School, was made at Volendam, a fishing village at the mouth of the River IJ and the Zuiderzee in North Holland, near Edam. It was very much en vogue as an artists’ retreat in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.","physicalDescription":"The recto study shows a fisherwoman standing full length in profile to the left, knitting and wearing traditional Dutch clothing with apron and bonnet. ","historicalContext":"Volendam was very much en vogue as an artists’ retreat in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: from c. 1890 onwards, many artists—including Picasso and Renoir––stayed there for a few days to record the picturesque surroundings in drawings, watercolours and paintings. If Dutch, the present study may, in the opinion of Robert-Jan te Rijdt (written communication, 17 February 2012), be by one of the many followers of Willy Sluiter (1873–1949). Since Volendam was also popular with touring English or German artists, the current anonymous English classification could well be right.","briefDescription":"Drawing, Study of Dutch women (recto and verso), by Percyval Tudor-Hart, late 19th century-early 20th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"A.A.
