Influenced by the bright and vivacious designs of Leon Bakst for the Ballets Russes, it has an air of theatricality veering towards the surreal. The dream-like sequence of exotic characters includes sleeping nymphs, oriental trees, and the Commedia dell'Arte characters of Harlequin, Columbine and Pierrot, taken from traditional Italian theatre. Such figures were frequently portrayed in paintings and sculptures in the late 1920s, which were popularly displayed in Art Deco interiors.\r\n\r\nOriginally an architect of the Glasgow School, Walton became more interested in the qualities of pattern in interior decoration. Working mainly for mainstream textile manufacturers, such as Morton's, Walton continued the popular traditional patterns of the period in his work.","physicalDescription":"Hand-coloured textile design showing characters of Columbine, Harlequin and Pierrot from the Commedia dell'Arte and other theatrical elements.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"George Walton","id":"A8964"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"bodycolour","id":"x34671"}],"techniques":[{"text":"process engraving","id":"x45591"},{"text":"hand-colouring","id":"AAT133555"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand-coloured process engraving","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM9848"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"138","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"February 1927","earliest":"1927-02-01","latest":"1927-02-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Courtaulds Ltd.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"700","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"962","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"George Walton.
