Oppe notes that the drawing is inconsistent with Hogarth's style and J Ireland ascribed both print and drawing to Vandergucht. The subject referes to the custom among some Whigs of eating a calf's head, appropriately decorated, on the anniversary of Charles I's execution. In 1734-5, a birthday party including some members of the Society of Dilettanti, was mistaken for such a meeting and caused a riot outside the tavern at which it was taking place.
