The Museum had initially occupied an inherited structure, Brompton Park House, and the temporary structures of the Brompton Boilers and James Pennethorne’s ‘Junction’ building. This plan shows their gradual replacement by permanent edifices designed by Francis Fowke and, after his death in 1865, by Henry Scott. The Brompton Boilers have gone and, in their place, Scott’s New Court (now the Cast Courts, Rooms 46a-b) is marked ‘in progress’; the wing that extended northwards from the Junction building has also gone, having hindered the builders erecting Fowke’s Lecture Theatre block (the north range of the present Museum quadrangle). On the west side of Cromwell Road, the plan also shows the site of the 1862 exhibition, the temporary buildings of which were demolished in 1864.","physicalDescription":"Colour lithograph on paper. Entitled ‘South Kensington Museum Ground Plan’, this block plan is coloured to show permanent buildings, temporary buildings and buildings in progress. Arranged around a central quadrangle marked ‘Garden’, the permanent buildings include an apsed lecture theatre block on the north side of the quadrangle, the Residences to the west, and the North and South Courts (since reclad internally; now used for exhibitions) to the east. To the south of the quadrangle are linked temporary structures: the long range of the ‘Junction’ building and, marked ‘Naval School’, Brompton Park House (both now demolished). A further temporary structure is shown in the top-left corner of the plan: a range labelled ‘International Exhibition’, on the west side of Exhibition Road. Buildings in progress comprise the Science and Naval Schools (now the Henry Cole Wing) and New Court (now the Cast Courts, Rooms 46a-b). Entrances to the Museum illustrated, including horseshoe-shaped driveway from Cromwell Road; collections shown in the Exhibition Galleries listed; compass points marked.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Brooks, Vincent","id":"A33587"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"lithograph by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lithographic ink","id":"AAT187750"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"History of the V&A","id":"THES252692"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2014GY1460"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"FF","shelf":"18","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Print","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"Drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1867 - ca. 1873","earliest":"1862-01-01","latest":"1877-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr and Mrs Fowke Mangeot","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"height of paper","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"width of paper","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Plan of Victoria and Albert Museum showing existing buildings, Vincent Brooks, ca. 1867-1873","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"The donor was the artist's grandson"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"This object is part of a group of objects, E.921 to 947-1976, given by Mr. and Mrs. Fowke Mangeot"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Victoria and Albert Museum","id":"x32782"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.931-1976"],"accessionNumberNum":"931","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1976,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-06","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
