Lanterns had glazed sides to prevent the flame from blowing out, and wall lanterns were used in narrow, draughty spaces such as passages and stairs. (In a hall a larger lantern would usually be suspended from the ceiling.) They invariably had a mirrored back, like this one, to reflect more light. This example and its pair are in the emphatically architectural style associated with the architect and designer William Kent (1685-1748), and they may have been designed for one of the great houses built in Britain in the 1730s-40s in the Palladian style.","physicalDescription":"Mahogany wall-lantern, one of a pair. The front and two sides of transparent glass, the frame carved with Greek key pattern in low relief. Surmounted by a broken pediment enclosing a scallop shell, supported on a carved console. A candlestick would have been placed inside when light was needed.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved mahogany","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Lighting","id":"THES48925"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[{"text":"Palladian","id":"AAT21161"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AF3446"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES341417"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Wall-lantern","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1730-1735","earliest":"1730-01-01","latest":"1735-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"W.63A-1950","id":"O55158"},"association":"Pair"}],"creditLine":"Given by Brigadier W.
