Margaret Tempest illustrated the first 30 of these, from 1929 until 1970. The individual characterisation in her images made them household names. In fact artist and author often disagreed as to who could take the most credit for creating the characters. Tempest also wrote and illustrated 20 books of her own in the 1940s and 1950s, including the Pinky Mouse and Curley Cobbler series. \r\n\r\nTempest's characteristically subtle watercolour tones emphasize the faireis' delicate wings. The form of these wings recalls of those of insects.Their minute appearance is conveyed by the effort that three fairies make to open the cage door and free the trapped bird.","physicalDescription":"Pen and ink and watercolour drawing showing fairies attempting to rescue a bird from a basket work cage.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Tempest, Margaret","id":"A11362"},"association":{"text":"designed and made by","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pen and ink and watercolour","id":"x32505"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"},{"text":"illustration","id":"AAT54200"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink and watercolour on paper laid on to board","categories":[{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Fairy Tales and Legends","id":"THES263583"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2009CT3768","2009CT2341"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"I","shelf":"138","box":"D"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":"AAT33973"}],[{"text":"illustrations","id":"AAT15578"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1920-1925","earliest":"1920-01-01","latest":"1925-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the artist","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"26.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"\"MARGARET TEMPEST\"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"inscribed in ink in the bottom left corner"},{"content":"\"FROM MARGARET TEMPEST\r\n9 TRAFALGAR SQUARE\"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in ink on the verso"},{"content":"\"THE CHELSEA ILLUSTRATORS\r\n59 PARK WALK\r\nSW.3\"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in pencil on the verso"}],"objectHistory":"Given by Margaret Tempest in 1980.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tempest, Margaret (1892-1982).
