The arms are those of Sir Walter Calverley Blackett (1707-77) of Calverley, Leeds. He inherited the family estates in Northumberland in 1728, when his cousin, Sir William Blackett (1690-1728) died without issue. Under the terms of his inheritance, Sir Walter adopted the Blackett family arms -as seen on this decanter. Living at Wallington Hall in Northumberland, Sir Walter served as MP for Newcastle upon Tyne between 1734 and 1777. He was also High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1731-32, alderman of Newcastle and Mayor five times.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beilby, William","id":"A539"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelling (painting)","id":"x36974"},{"text":"glass-blowing","id":"AAT53932"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Glass, enamelled and gilded","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"}],"styles":[{"text":"BRITAIN","id":"AAT111159"},{"text":"ARMORIAL","id":"x29282"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006BK0699","2006BK0700","2006AT3045","2017JW4647"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"131 (VA)","id":"THES49882"},"free":"","case":"23","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bottle","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Newcastle upon Tyne","id":"x29507"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1762","earliest":"1762-01-01","latest":"1762-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Wilfred Buckley Collection","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"No bottom, no stopper","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Inscribed '1762' (diamond-engraved), 'Beilby Junr pinxit & Invt N'Castle' and 'CLARET' (enamelled)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"probably maker's mark","note":"probably maker's mark"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Decanter for Claret, England (Newcastle-upon-Tyne), painted in enamels by William Beilby Jr., dated 1762.
